Sweetassgal here! here checking in with a really great and natural pressed powder from Gabriel Cosmetics!
My skin is becoming an increasing concern of mine as I inch my way up the 30’s ladder. Thanks to many of the products I’ve discovered on this site (Juara Rice Face Wash, Eminence Organics Rosehip Whip Moisturizer and Apoteke Detox Mask) I rarely have breakouts like I used to. And when I do they are gone in a matter of days and not weeks like they used to be. However, one thing I’m finding is inescapable. No matter how many “whitening” or “brightening” products I try I am forever left looking flushed or blushing. I truly hate it…from the depths of my soul. Every picture I take I look like the bright red end of a thermometer ready to burst mercury out the top of my head. I even switched from being a lifelong blonde to brunette because the redness of my skin against bright blonde hair was just awful. If I never have to take another picture in my life now I’d be happy…but alas…with my camera happy friends and family that will never be and continue to be tortured with every flash of the camera.
So what to do? Sad as it may be my only choice left is simply to cover it up. I have never been a fan of foundations and concealers (though I find them extremely necessary when covering up my that-time-of-the-month eruptions) and have always preferred pressed powders. I don’t know if it’s the ease of whipping one out any time with no fuss or muss or if I’m just pigheaded but for daily maintenance its still my go-to method of application. So far all of the more natural or organic brands have pretty much been a disappointment. The Physicians I tried a while back gave decent light day coverage but was never a choice for a fully glam and made up look (and the flimsy compact broke halfway through leaving me to scrounge for the top in the bottom of my make up bag when it inevitably pulled away from the base). Most of the natural mineral products have left me looking shiny and didn’t last. That lovely mineral “glow” is great on young ladies with peaches and cream skin but on me it just adds shine to the red making me look more like a red delicious apple. Add shiny red cheeks to my current weight struggle and you might as well call me Mrs. Claus. How the hell did I end up here? I digress.
Gabriel Cosmetics Dual Powder Foundation has been a welcome and happy find to reduce my redness and give me the matte complexion I crave. I purchased it at the Elliott’s Natural Foods in Rocklin (thank you Amanda K. and friend for fetching me another Light Beige Powder from the back with a smile and a “no problem” attitude…customer service is greatly appreciated by me!) and tried it on before I could even get home. It’s packaged in a sleek and sophisticated black and gold case, suitable for application any where, and thankfully puts the mirror in the TOP of the compact where it belongs! I hate those that put it in the bottom under the sponge requiring you to flip back and forth from powder to mirror, powder to mirror. Annoying. Right away I noticed that the powder/foundation blend went easily onto my skin and gave excellent coverage. Some powders sit ON TOP of your skin making you look like someone just dusted your face with one of those giant powder puffs. This blended with coverage that was just right and left me matte and fresh looking without the thickness of wearing liquid foundation or the shine of minerals. Loved it.
Here’s what the Gabriel’s Cosmetics website has to say…This velvety plant-based formula performs both as a foundation and powder for a smooth matte finish. When applied with a dry sponge, it creates an ultra matte finish or use a moist sponge for a sheer, fresh appearance. Formulated to help minimize shine and absorb excess oil without clogging pores or drying skin. Enhanced with vegetable derived Squalane for luxurious texture and ease of application. Contains proven antioxidants for superior protection against environmental damage. A non-chemical PABA-free sunscreen has been added to shield skin from harmful sun exposure.
My first morning application lasts easily through until lunchtime and requires just a minimal touch up to my nose (my most oily feature) and never feels cakey or heavy upon reapplication. Though there are plenty of great powders out there that perform equally as well I think I’ll stick to this one for a while for its natural properties and built in SPF (YES!…ALL products used on the skin should require it!) as well as to be able to support my local Elliott’s Natural Foods because I truly believe in keeping your money working locally if you can. However you can go onto the Gabriel’s website under store locator and find a health food store near you that is smart enough to carry the line like Elliott’s does!
